Leg 3: 27.september – 04.October
Leg 4: 04.october – 11.october
The Aeolian Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes seven unique islands off Sicily's northern coast: Lipari, Panarea, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Alicudi, and Filicudi. These islands are known for their unspoiled beauty and active volcanoes (Stromboli and Vulcano). Each summer, they attract up to 600,000 tourists, generating significant plastic waste that may pollute the Mediterranean Sea.

In 2021 we did a very first mapping of microplastics down to 0.1 mm around the Aeolian Islands, comparing near-shore to off-shore sample densities. In 2022 we focused on triplicate measurements to assess the robustness of the field data. This expedition is a follow-up study from our 2023/24 expeditions, intending to monitor surface water microplastic samples down to an even smaller size of 50 microns (0.05mm).
